The Lowveld Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals rescues abused and neglected domestic, farm and wild animals, promotes responsible pet ownership, provides a shelter for strays and a veterinary service for pets of underprivileged people.

The SPCA is the only Animal Welfare Organisation in South Africa which is governed by an Act of Parliament, the SPCA Act, 169 of 1993.

Every Society has to be registered with the Department of Social Development and Welfare (NPO). We receive NO government support and rely on the Public to continue in our quest for a cruelty free South Africa.

The SPCA plays a major role in promoting and setting up of Codes of Conduct, doing research and compiling of information – using the three ‘R’s – Reduce, Refine and Replace animals in research and wildlife capacities;

Enforcing these codes as well as serving on numerous Committees and Welfare Groups;
The only animal welfare organisation to be registered with the Department of Labour for qualifying inspectors;
The only Animal Welfare Organisation with a National Controlling body – being controlled democratically by the separate Societies;
An Animal Welfare Organisation with an executive director who is a full member of WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals);

Our Team

  • Louie Amorim – Chairperson
  • Denise Dias – Vice Chairperson
  • Jessie Moodly – Treasurer
  • Cindy Jacobsohn – Secretary
  • Gayle Smythe

What we do

We fight animal cruelty by:
• Educating and assisting poorer communities with their animals husbandry.
• Assisting in uplifting poorer communities.
• Helping the community with food and beds for the animals
• Helping the community with treatments and sterilizations for animals

How can you help us?

Animals cannot speak for themselves and if welfare organisations cannot step in and do whatever is necessary to make their lives better, who will?

1. Give us Your Time

We are looking for help on an ongoing basis, voluntary weekend workers as the Inspector is not always on duty and animals need to be fed and walked and kennels cleaned. We are also always looking for people to assist with fundraising events and handyman services at both kennels. Always need electricians, builders or someone who can fix things.

2. Donate items on Our Wish List

We desperately need the following:

• High pressure sprays

• Blow torches

• Blankets

• Dog beds

• Shampoo and tick powders

• Dog food

• Doggie and cat toys

3. Make a Cash Donation

Our banking details:

FNB Riverside Park
Account: 54281164804
Branch: 256405
Cheque Account

We would like you to know that not only will your donation directly benefit the animals in our area but – through a sharing agreement between all SPCAs nationwide – a portion will be used in other, less fortunate areas to benefit animals over a wider area. We feel sure you will approve of this outreach initiative and wish to thank you most sincerely for supporting our SPCA and the movement generally.
